The first year starts with a 5-week orientation to familiarize interns with the emergency department, refresh emergency medicine topics, provide hands-on skills labs, and foster connections with classmates.

Our goal is for residents to be able to run an emergency department. Fourth years are also responsible for flow and supervise our junior residents and medical students. We also pride ourselves on taking great care of our local patients, an extremely diverse population.

International Medical Graduates (IMGs)

Rotation highights include: emergency medicine, pediatric emergency medicine, critical care, and other quality off-service rotations that build a strong foundation. Multiple elective opportunities are also available. The new ,square-foot Stanford Hospital, opening inwill feature state-of-art technology and an emergency department with twice the floor space of the current facility.

Stanford is the main site of clinical training. Kaiser Permanente Medical Center offers award-winning community-based care, and a precedent-setting efficiency model, as well as faculty-to-resident teaching ratio.

Interns run codes alongside attendings. Santa Clara Valley Medical Center provides a robust county experience in the busiest county emergency department in the Bay Area. Residents participate in multi-disciplinary learning that includes simulation training, ultrasound procedure skills and case-based learning. In our state-of-art adult and pediatric simulation centers, residents manage progressively more complex cases, including multiple patient scenarios and difficult critical care codes.

Hands-on labs teach basic FAST, aorta, cardiac, gallbladder, renal and advanced ultrasound techniques venous access, orbital, procedural, etc ; as well as rapid ultrasound in shock. National experts teach hands-on advanced airway techniques, including fiberoptics, intubating LMAs, glidescopes, trachlights, cricothyrotomy kits, and more on mannequins and cadavers.

We have incorporated the Foundations curriculum into our Wednesday conferences. Each 4 th year gives Grand Rounds during their final year.
